Weston Airfield, Sunday 28 February 2010

The prophets of doom were forecasting dire weather for the day, but as usual the forecasters were somewhat wide of the mark and what we got was a pretty standard February day for the Bristol Channel; in other words, cold and windy, with occasional rain and even some short sunny periods. Certainly nothing to dampen everyone's enthusiasm, and a glance at the faces gathered to hear the results at the end of the day revealed only pleasure and satisfaction!

Jamie Yapp had a decisive victory over his fellow BTRDA members in Class 1, but Class 2 produced one of the closest finishes we've ever seen, with BMC members Ben Griffin and Andy Laurence ending on exactly level points. The result was therefore decided by the tie-break which put 0.2 seconds between them, the honours going to Andy Laurence. This was the first time that Andy had actually succeeded in bringing his Golf to the line at a home club event, so his persistence was thus well rewarded. But this was a 3-way tussle, with AutoSolo veteran Simon Harris in third place, a mere 0.1 second behind the leading pair.

Dolphin member Alastair Barnes made a worthwhile journey from Harwell to take 1st in class 3 on his debut at a Bristol event, putting last year's CMSG Champion, BMC member Dave Greenslade into 2nd place. Class 4 was an almost exclusive Bristol MC and Lotus affair, the honours going to Ian Ball, who has swapped his Elise for an Exige since he last competed here. He was around 2 secs ahead of Matt Browne, who in turn put around another 2 secs between himself and Mark Gray.

Finally, FTD went to the highly experienced AutoSolo competitor and event organiser from Oxford Motor Club, Kevin Belcher, who built a decisive lead over his class 3 opponents Alastair Barnes and Dave Greenslade.

So, given the examples of both inter-club rivalry and internecine competition throughout the field, the pleasure and satisfaction previously mentioned was hardly surprising. The full results can be downloaded here:
