THE JOE FRY TROPHYThis is a scale model of the Freikaiserwagen, the iconic car originally built by David Fry and Hugh Dunsterville in the 1930s, and developed by them into a record-breaking hillclimb car. With David's cousin Joe Fry at the wheel, it broke several hillclimb records, culminating in the Shelsley Walsh record in 1949. Joe was tragically killed at the age of 34 in a practice accident at Blandford Camp in July 1950. Hugh Dunsterville's son Rob tells the whole story in a book entitled "FREIK - The Private Life of the Freikaiserwagen". Details of how to buy a copy, together with updates and further information, can be found on the website www.freikaiserwagen.com The miniature is by the model-maker Rex Hays, and its genesis is described in his book "Tribute by Trophy". It was commissioned soon after Joe's death by his widow Pat Fry as a tribute to her late husband. She had it mounted on a plinth and donated it to the Bristol MC & LCC, where it is now awarded annually to the Best Bristol club member at the Wiscombe 5-Clubs Hillclimb.
